A GREAT TIME FOR THE KIDS AT SHIPYARD

Thinking about staying home because you aren’t sure if the Shipyard Music Festival is kid-friendly? Well pack it up and come on out to Ivers Square in downtown Cape September 27-28, because we’ve been busy planning activities of connection, kindness and community for your kiddos. We want them to feel like the Shipyard weekend is theirs, too.

The best part? Kids 10 and under get free access to the music festival with a ticketed adult.

To help create an atmosphere of inclusion and community for them, the first 100 kiddos here will get a Shipyard activity book illustrated by local artists, featuring and teaching about the bands onstage.

We’ve also planned activities for the kids throughout the weekend, including craft times at which they can create messages of kindness in a bottle, plant seeds with the hopes of something small growing into something bigger, make musical instruments as budding musicians and more. There will also be entertainment specifically for the kids: they can get tatted up with henna and temporary tattoos from a real tattoo artist, participate in a live sing-along and listen to storytelling. We’ll also have toys and games at the kids’ tents for them to play with all festival long.

In case that isn’t enough, we’ve blocked off Themis Street to create a communal sidewalk chalk mural and we’ll have other communal murals throughout the grounds, so be sure you and your kids make it over to contribute to each of them.

We are stoked to see you and your kids at Shipyard September 27-28 at Ivers Square in downtown Cape Girardeau for the second year of the Shipyard Music Festival. Get ready to make some family memories; get your tickets at shipyardfest.com. See you soon!

Shipyard Kids’ Area Schedule of Events

Location:
We’re located at the back of the festival grounds, to the right of the food vendors when you’re facing away from the stage.

Friday, September 27
5:00-8:30 p.m.: Make friendship bracelets

A music festival staple: make a friendship bracelet to give to an old friend. Or, befriend someone new and spread love by making a bracelet for them.

6:00-8:00 p.m.: Henna + temporary tattoos
Hop on up in that tattooing chair; we have a real tattoo artist on-site ready to give you an official Shipyard temporary tattoo or a henna tattoo of your choice.

6:45-7:15 p.m.: Acoustic sing-along
Get ready for some fun — local musician Jefferson Fox is at the kids’ tents ready to lead you in song in between sets on the main stage.

7:15-8:00 p.m.: Glow-in-the-dark Kids’ Zumba with Zumba Ellen
Get up, shake your glowstick and get moving to the beat of the Shipyard with Ellen Gipson of Zumba Ellen.

Saturday, September 28
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Make a message in a bottle

Get Shipyard-y by writing a message of kindness and putting it in a recycled bottle you decorate. Then, give it to someone who seems like they could use a kind word.

12:45-1:15 p.m.: Story Time
Needing a post-lunch afternoon break? We love to read, and we're reading stories together at the kids' tent. Come rest for a bit and share in some fun storybooks with friends!

1:30-2:30 p.m.: Make musical instruments

For all of you budding musicians, this activity is for you. Make a kazoo or a drum out of recycled materials so you can play along from the crowd with the musicians on stage.

2:30-4:30 p.m.: Face painting
Always a favorite, we’ll have local artists on the scene painting faces. Or, if you feel so inclined, paint your own face or paint your friend’s face, instead.

3:15-3:45 p.m.: Drum Circle
Come hang out with the leaders of the Honorable Young Men Club and friends while they drum. If you made a drum earlier in the day, bring it along and join them!

4:00-5:00 p.m.: Plant a seed
The good folks from Spanish Street Farmacy are at the kids’ tent helping you plant sunflower seeds and decorate recycled cups that double as plant pots. They’re also drawing your portraits. So come on over and plant something small in hopes of watching it grow into something big and beautiful.

5:00-5:45 p.m.: Balloon animals
Come get a balloon animal made, and learn how to make your own!

5:00-7:45 p.m.: Make friendship bracelets
Didn’t have a chance to make a friendship bracelet yesterday? Or did you make a new friend who needs a bracelet today? We’ve got the supplies ready for you to make a bracelet to solidify your friendship.

7:45-8:30 p.m.: Make a puppet
We have all the supplies for you to make a puppet to take home with you. Thanks for being a part of the Shipyard Music Festival!
